Master of Advanced Studies in
Design Research for Digital Innovation

Designers play a vital role in innovation

Enhancing the leading role that designers play in innovation, the EPFL+ECAL Lab has been running a one-of-a-kind educational programme since 2014. The Master of Advanced Studies in Design Research for Digital Innovation (MAS DRDI) offers a novel training experience, combining academic research and innovation with concrete application.

The students taking part in this two-year programme combine advanced education with a real-life project.

Working in close collaboration with designers, engineers and psychologists, they acquire an extensive knowledge of the digital sector in terms of immersive technologies, interaction design and research strategies.

Based on a transdisciplinary approach.

This Master of Advanced Studies includes workshops, studio projects and case studies which allow students to reflect on emerging technologies with a human-centered perspective, explore their potential and develop unprecedented uses. The focus is on understanding user perception as well as building essential knowledge for meaningful and sustainable innovation.

In direct contact with industry partners and cultural institutions, each student is assigned to a research project.

Current topics include immersive experiences, co-creation bridging art and science, digital heritage, social innovation, inclusive social networks, narrative principles for augmented and virtual reality, and big data visualization. Located in the ECAL building, the MAS DRDI run by the EPFL+ECAL Lab enables the students to pursue academic studies at 30%, while working as research assistants at 70%. The salary of this research assistant position allows them to be financially independent.
