Training high-level professionals to understand each other

The EPFL+ECAL Lab proposes four learning programmes: a Master of Advanced Studies linked to a research project, Design School workshops, introductory classes in design intended for EPFL students, and classes on electronics and new technologies for ECAL students.

MAS DRDI

MAS

The Master of Advanced Studies in Design Research for Digital Innovation (MAS DRDI) offers a novel training experience, combining academic research and innovation with concrete application through external partners. The EPFL+ECAL Lab accepts between 3 and 5 candidates per year. Over a period of two years, the candidates will dedicate 30% of their time to study, and 70% to working as research and teaching assistants. During their training, they will acquire extensive knowledge of the digital sector in terms of interaction design, research strategies, innovation, and collaboration with engineers and industry partners.

The research workshops

ALICE_workshops_2

The research workshops take place within the context of the Laboratory’s projects. The Laboratory invites design institutes to adopt a particular theme, usually for an entire term. The EPFL+ECAL Lab provides partner institutes with a wide range of expertise and a framework for experimentation. It involves itself in projects at several points and values the results. This approach forms the unique international dynamic found behind projects such as Sunny Memories, Lazy Bytes and Hidden Carbon.

Classes in electronics &
new technologies for designers

AMBIANCES_0054

Classes in electronics and new technologies for designers allow ECAL students to familiarise themselves with the key concepts of electronics and interactive and connected objects. They also cover the principles of collaboration with engineers for innovation projects. For this very purpose, the EPFL+ECAL Lab offers a new room, fully equipped for the prototyping of circuits and electronic models, thanks to support from Fondation RAM and the Loterie Romande.

SHS CLASSES IN DESIGN
FOR EPFL STUDENTS

SHS-GR-051

Delivered by ECAL for EPFL students, the classes in design form part of the Human and Social Sciences curriculum. Graphic and industrial design are two options for the program at Bachelor and Master level. Through the completion of real life projects, EPFL students come to understand the designer’s approach when suggesting new user scenarios and forms of expression for the creation of new services and products.
